The Australian GP in the Gold Coast got off to an explosive start before the motos. In front of a pack house, there was early drama in qualifying and the Superpole shoot out for the World Supercross Australian GP.

Joey Savatgy stole the show to take Superpole. The Quad Lock Honda rider saw off competition from a stellar line-up at the Cbus Super Stadium to snatch first gate pick.

The 31-year-old, who was third in the World Supercross Championship last season, pipped current leader Ken Roczen.

Roczen, who had dominated in Round 1 in Buenos Aires and was strong in Round 2 in Vancouver, had to settle for second pick on his Suzuki riding for Pipes Motorsport Group.

Eli Tomac, who won the round in Canada on his debut for KTM, was third and Gregory Aranda was an impressive fourth ahead of wildcards Haiden Deegan and Cooper Webb.

In SX2, Brazil’s Enso Lopes took Superpole for Arby’s Rick Ware Racing in a run that ended Max Anstie’s impressive start to the season.

Lopes, who was strong in Canada too, beat the Brit, who was only fourth after making a rare error on his lap.

Reigning SX2 world champion Shane McElrath took second pick and Cole Thompson was third.
